The Clever Boys broke the deadlock as early as the 10th minute, with Thulani Hlatshwayo tapping home at the near post after some impressive build-up play.

Stars nearly hit back on the break after 13 minutes but Dlamini saw his curling effort crash against the upright with Darren Keet well left flat-footed.

Wits continued to dominate possession, although the tempo of the clash slowed down after the 20-minute mark as they looked to build up from the back.

However, the hosts doubled their lead on 29 minutes as Deon Hotto's free-kick found Macuphu, who sent a glancing header past Badra Ali Sangare.

Gavin Hunt's charges managed to see off any late push from the Free State outfit in the remaining stages of the first half.

Keet had to be at his best in the 57th minute as the Wits shot-stopper produced a superb save to keep out Sinethemba Jantjie's strike.

With 15 minutes remaining, the Clever Boys grabbed a third goal as Hotto marked his debut with a goal by finishing off a fine team move.

The home side managed to see out the closing stages with relative ease as they begin the season with an emphatic win.

Here's how they lined up:

Wits: Keet, Hlatshwayo, Johannes, Monare, Hotto, Hlanti, Mkhwanazi, Alexander, Motupa, Macuphu, Dzvukamanja.
