Botes' Debut Strike Rescues Wits
Result: Bidvest Wits 1-1 University of Pretoria
Date: 12 August 2014
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Henrico Botes cancelled out Atusaye Nyondo's first half strike, as Bidvest Wits and the University of Pretoria drew 1-1 in Absa Premiership tie at Bidvest Stadium.
Although the Clever Boys failed to pick up all three points, the draw sees them rise to the top of the Absa Premiership table.
The visitors took the lead as early as the fifth minute, as great work from Geoffrey Massa down the left flank set up Nyondo, who made no mistake from 12-yards out.
Washington Arubi came to Tuks' rescue in the 15th minute, as he pulled off a fine reaction save to keep out Sibusiso Vilakazi's free-kick.
The home side should have doubled their advantage just before the half time break, as Nyondo dribbled past the on-rushing Jackson Mabokgwane, before crossing for Massa, who miscued his header with the goal at his mercy.
Wits pushed for a equaliser, and were rewarded in the 58th as Henrico Botes leveled matters with his first strike for the club.
The home side almost went ahead in the 70th minute, but Thulani Hlatshwayoo's header was pushed onto the upright by Arubi, and Katongo somehow missed from close range on the follow-up.
The visitors had to finish the game with 10 men, after Ngubane was shown his second yellow card of the game.
Wits will feel they should have snatched all three points, but they never managed to create any meaningful chances, despite all their possession.
Here's how they lined up:
