Ten-Man Wits Scrape Past SuperSport

Absa Premiership

Teams: Bidvest Wits 1-0 SuperSport United

Date: 22 September 2015

Venue: Bidvest Stadium

Jabulani Shongwe's first-half strike handed 10-man Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win over SuperSport United at the Bidvest Stadium.

It proved to be a real cagey affair for most of the first half, with both sides committing needless fouls, which led to a stop-start affair.

Wits broke the deadlock five minutes before the halftime break when Jabulani Shongwe combined well with Daine Klate, before firing into the top corner from 12-yards out.

The home side were then dealt a blow on the stroke when Henrico Botes was given his marching orders for second yellow card, following off-the-ball altercation with Clayton Daniels.

However, Wits nearly added to their lead in the 61st minute when Phumlani Ntshangase was teed up on the edge of the area, but the midfielder's effort sailed inches over the crossbar.

Gordon Igesund decided change things up in the second half, as brought on Bradley Grobler to join Jeremy Brockie and Kingston Nkhatha, who had been brought on earlier.

Wits substitute, Joaquim Lupeta, came to close to extending his side's lead after 80 minutes, but his stinging effort from distance was saved by Ronwen Williams.

Markus Lecki then came to Wits' rescue at the other end a few minutes later, as he popped up with a wonderful black to deny Brockie a strike at goal from six-yards out.

Despite being a man down, Wits nearly added a second goal in the 88th minute but Ntshangase's cheeky strike rattled the woodwork.

Gavin Hunt's men survived the late surge from SuperSport, Moeneeb Josephs hardly had  a save to make throughout the 90 minutes, although the same can be said for Ronwen Williams.

Wits held on for the win and have now moved to the top of the Absa Premiership standings.

Here's how they lined up:

Bidvest Wits: Josephs, Allie, Hlatshwayo, Klate, Pelembe, Mkhwanazi, Faty, Botes, Shongwe, Bhsasera, Ntshangase

SuperSport United: Williams, Boxall, Daniels, B.Khumalo, Farmer, Mkhabela, Morton, Phala, Cernak, Wome, Brockie
