Absa Premiership Report: Baroka v Orlando Pirates 22 August 2017

Absa Premiership

Result: Baroka FC 1-1 Orlando Pirates

Date: 22 August 2017

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Orlando Pirates dropped points in their first away fixture in the Absa Premiership, as they drew 1-1 with Baroka FC on Tuesday evening.

The Buccaneers enjoyed a good amount of possession in the opening 10 minutes, but they were unable to carve out clear-cut chances.

Baroka were then dealt a blow after 17 minutes when Matome Kgoetyane was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Albert Mothupa.

The game's first chance arrived on 24 minutes as Innocent Maela sent a fine cross toward Musa Nyatama, who failed to direct his header on target.

After a quiet spell in the half, Pirates eventually broke the deadlock five minutes before the break courtesy of a goal from Thabo Qalinge, who headed home Mpho Makola's cross.

Baroka, meanwhile, found it tough to carve out clear-cut openings, but Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands was called upon just before the break as he produced a good save to keep out Gift Motupa's header.

The hosts opted for a change at the start of the second half, as new signing Siphelele Ntshangase replaced Motupa.

The second stanza started in the same vein as the first, which prompted Pirates into a change on 58 minutes as Thabo Rakhale replaced Luvuyo Memela.

Pirates should have doubled their advantage two minutes later as Qalinge's through ball found Thamsanqa Gabuza, who failed to slot past Virgil Vries from close range.

Baroka then leveled matters in the 73rd minute when Hassan Banda rose well to head home Sipho Moeti's corner at the far post.

The Buccaneers opted for a final throw of the dice as Thabiso Kutumela and Ayanda Nkosi were introduced for the final 10 minutes.

However, the home side did well to see off any late attacks from Pirates to claim their second point of the season.

Here's how they lined up:

Baroka: 30. Vries, 14. Motupa, 52. Kgoetyane (Mothupa 17'), 3. Mahashe, 66. Bandu, 21. Moeti, 7. Chawapihwa, 2. Masenamela, 16. Madubanya, 47. Kgaswane, 14. Mosele (Mdantsane 45').

Pirates: 40. Sandilands, 6. Shitolo, 34. Nyauza, 8. Matlaba, 21.Maela, 45. Mobara (Nkosi 82'), 5. Makola, 14. Nyatama, 37. Memela, 15. Qalinge (Kutumela 80'), 31. Gabuza.

its not a loss we dropped two points instead of taking all 3 . Coach shud have been a bit vocal the moment the guys started slacking and defending deep, you cant wait for the team to score then you pickup again no.....1 is no safe get 2 atleast then work on insurance goal no 3 you cant be working on killing the game at 1........but the substitution ws good putting in 2 strikers making it 3 on the field but shud have made that change atleast with 15more min to play but again we are a work in progress well done

Pirates gave away a stupid goal, why leave opponent alone when corner kick was taken? That's poor defending, coach must correct that, Makola lost ball cheaply every time, otherwise players are improving than last season

These big mouths are happy for now. After their game tonight they will be so quiet. This game has a win, a draw and a loss. Its all about competing and doing well. Now its them tonight to show us what they have.

"Ba ba leng ka hodimo ba tla ya ka ho tlase, Ba ba leng ka ho tlase ba tla ya ka hodimo". You can't say you will win the League when you just won one game, it's too early. Honestly!! Baroka and Polokwane frustrated these "STAR FC" friends last night. It could have been worse, but the controversial Penalty and the fluke goal from Qalinge saved the night. Honestly...
