Downs Move To Within Three Points Of Pirates

Absa Premiership

Result: Baroka FC 1-2 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 20 April 2019

Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns moved to within three points of Absa Premiership leaders Orlando Pirates with victory over Baroka on Saturday afternoon.
Sundowns clicked in to gear in the 10th minute. The returning Sibusiso Vilakazi combined well with Lebohang Maboe and let fly at goal but he was denied by a good save from Baroka goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.
Soon after, Hlompho Kekana and Vilakazi combined well down the middle for the visitors, but the finishing from Themba Zwane was poor as the ball flew over the cross-bar.
Chipezeze was called in to action again in the 15th minute when Thapelo Morena had a go from long-range after skinning his man, but it was a routine save for the Zimbabwean shot-stopper.
The game went through a bit of lull before Masandawana were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute after Vilakazi was fouled in the box. Ricardo Nascimento stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick to break the deadlock.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with both teams feeling each other out. But all of a sudden and against the run of play, Bakgaga equalized in the 52nd minute. Onkabetse Makgantai received a perfect pass from Bonginkosi Makume and he made no mistake by slotting it high into the roof of the net.
Five minutes later, Sundowns restored their lead through a brilliant strike from Zwane, who linked up well with Maboe in the box before firing an unstoppable drive past a helpless Chipezeze.
Mosimane's side were applying all the pressure and deserved their lead. In the 74th minute, Zwane had an excellent chance to make the scoreline more flattering but he was denied at point-blank range by an excellent Chipezeze save.
Baroka were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Rodwell Chinyengetere was given a red card for his dangerous tackle on Kekana. As a result of that, the hosts were forced into a positional change, with Jemondre Dickens replacing Matome Mabeba.
No further clear-cut opportunities were created as Mosimane's men held on for a precious three points.
