Absa Premiership
Full Time: AmaZulu 0-2 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 9 March 2014
Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium
Goals from Surprise Moriri and Teko Modise handed Mamelodi Sundowns a comfortable 2-0 win over AmaZulu in an Absa Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Sundowns started the better of the two teams and created their first chance on goal in the eighth minute when Tebogo Langerman let fly from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort well-saved as Tapuwa Kapini tipped it around the post for a corner.
It was from that corner-kick that the Brazilians took the lead as Surprise Moriri headed home an Elias Pelembe cross, 1-0.
Hlompo Kekana had Sundowns’ next attempt on goal in the 14th minute when he fired a 24-yard free-kick just over the crossbar.
Kapini was at his best nine minutes later, making a good stop to thwart an effort from Bongani Zungu.
In the 28th minute it was the turn of Moriri to test the reflexes of Kapini, but again the keeper stood firm to make the stop.
Ten minutes later AmaZulu had their first decent effort of the half as Marc Van Heerden fired a 25-yard free-kick inches wide of the post.
Usuthu grew with confidence after that and finished the half the stronger of the two teams.
Lunga Zondi came close to levelling matters for his side two minutes before the break as he met a Bongi Macala cross, but his header skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar.
AmaZulu had the first chance of the second half when Van Heerden fired a shot narrowly wide in the 53rd minute.
Six minutes later Sundowns nearly doubled their lead from another corner when Rashid Sumaila headed a Pelembe cross wide from close range.
Sundowns, though, did find their second goal in the 75th minute as Teko Modise turned home a pin-point pass from Anthony Laffor, 2-0.
AmaZulu tried to find their way back into the match, but Sundowns held on for a comfortable win which takes them to within six points of the league leader’s Kaizer Chiefs.
