Sundowns Loanee Fires Ajax Past Resurgent WIts

Absa Premiership

Result: Ajax Cape Town 1-0 Bidvest Wits

Date: 11 April 2018

Venue: Athlone Stadium

Yannick Zakri's first-half strike was enough to hand Ajax Cape Town a vital 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday evening.

The match was open in the early stages, with end-to-end attacks but the final ball from both sides let them down.

The Clever Boys were particularly dangerous with their wing-play inside the first quarter of the half but the Urban Warriors goalkeeper Jody February was on top of his game.

Vincent Pule nearly gave Gavin Hunt’s charges the lead in the 21st minute with a shot from inside the box but goalkeeper February made a good save.

In the 26th minute, Yannick Zakri broke the deadlock Muhsin Ertugral’s troops, racing clear to slip his shot past Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet following a through ball from Fagrie Lakay, 1-0.

Lehlohonolo Majoro almost found the reply for Hunt’s men on the stroke of halftime with a close range shot but February made sure the Urban Warriors went into the break with their 1-0 lead.

Tercious Malepe had a chance to double the lead for the hosts eight minutes into to the second stanza after receiving a loose ball in his stride just outside the box but sent his effort wide.

Lakay nearly made it 2-0 for the Mother City club in the 63rd minute with a great shot from an acute angle but the Clever Boys shot-stopper Keet pulled off an equally great save.

The Urban Warriors were forced to absorb the pressure with 20 minutes remaining as the visitors were pressing high with a wave of attack after another.

Lakay should have killed the game for the Cape Town outfit six minutes before time after Zakri did all the work to win a lost cause and squared the ball to young striker, who blasted over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

However, the Urban Warriors managed to hold on until the full-time whistle to claim the vital victory in their quest to avoid relegation.
