Result: Ajax Cape Town 2-0 SuperSport United
Date: 28 February 2018
Venue: Athlone Stadium
Ajax Cape Town boosted their hopes of survival with a 2-0 win over struggling SuperSport United at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Eric Tinkler’s charges carved out the first real chance of the game after 10 minutes, with Morgan Gould coming close to finding the net with a looping header inside the box.
Muhsin Ertugral’s men showed good intensity after 20 minutes and they unsettled the United defence by forcing them into mistakes, which almost led to a breakthrough but the visitors escaped by the skin of their teeth.
Yannick Zakri was unlucky not to have found the back of the net for the home side in the 33rd minute with a free header inside the box that sailed narrowly wide.
Chances were few and far between thereafter and the first stanza ended goalless in Athlone.
Fagrie Lakay finally broke the deadlock for the Urban Warriors five minutes into the second half with a fine low strike into the far corner from the edge of the box.
Thabo Mnyamane had a chance to equalise for Matsatsantsa on the hour-mark with a free-kick just outside the box but his strike was smothered by goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.
With 20 minutes remaining, Ertugral made his first alteration, withdrawing Lakay for Ndiviwe Mdabuka while Tinkler also replaced Azubuike Egwuekwe with Thuso Phala.
The Urban Warriors sealed the victory in the 77th minute when Williams failed to hold on to Roderick Kabwe's cross, which fell into the path of Mario Booysen, who showed great reactions to slot home from close range.
Sipho Mbule almost scored a consolation goal in stoppage time for United but his long-range strike deflected onto the upright as the score remained 2-0 at the full-time whistle.
The win sees Ertugral's charges move up one spot into 14th, with Polokwane City dropping into 15th place.
