It was a lone goal in the second half from Travis Graham that handed the Urban Warriors their first win of the season, against the reigning PSL champions.

Katlego Mashego had the first chance for Sundowns in the tenth minute, but his snap shot after getting the ball from an industrious Elias Pelembe, flew over the bar.

In the 23rd minute Pelembe tried a shot from just inside the box, but teenage defender Rivaldo Coetzee made a good block to stop the goal-bound shot.

Ajax slowly began to get more into the game, but Tashreeq Morris’ long range attempt in the 27th minute flew high and wide.

With the weather causing a lot of problems, there were no clear cut chances for either side in the opening 45 minutes.

Mame Niang came close three minutes into the second half, but he was unable to get his header from a Tebogo Langerman cross on target, and it sailed wide.

Two minutes later Ajax grabbed the lead, when new captain Travis Graham scored from the edge of the area with a good shot, after Nathan Paulse had laid the ball back for him.

In the 53rd minute Sundowns tried to hit back, but Teko Modise’s shot from just outside the box was blocked by Keagan Dolly.

Two minutes later Langerman had two opportunities for Sundowns, but on both occasions he chose to cross rather than shoot, but couldn’t find a teammate.

In the 68th minute substitute Bongi Ntuli thought he had a penalty as he was went down before he could take a shot, but the referee waved play on.

A minute later Modise had a chance, but it lacked any power and Anssi Jaakkola saved easily.

Paulse almost doubled the home team’s lead in the 74th minute, but he couldn’t direct his header, and it went over the goal.

Hlompho Kekana tried a first time shot in the 78th minute, but he miscued his shot and it went high and wide.

With five minutes to go Ntuli broke through the middle and ran into the box, but Abubakar Mobara made life difficult for him and his final shot went just wide to the left of goal.

Themba Zwane had a glorious chance to grab an equaliser, but his shot from in the box, was volleyed over.

This is how they started:

Ajax Cape Town: Jaakkola, Lolo, Coetzee, Mobara, Lebusa, Graham, Morris, Scott, Paulse, Nkoana, Dolly

Mamelodi Sundowns: Sandilands, Langerman, Schut, Zwane, Booysen, Modise, Kekana, Niang, Pelembe, Mashego, Mbatha
