Chiefs To Go Top Of The Log?
Absa Premiership Preview 30 September 2017
In today’s Absa Premiership action, Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping that results will go their way and that they will find themselves at the summit of the PSL standings, come the end of the day.
Amakhosi will be taking on second-placed Baroka FC today and are just three points behind them in the league standings, while the team joining Baroka at the top of the table, Golden Arrows play host to Chippa United. Cape Town City will also be taking part in the Cape Town derby against neighbours Ajax Cape Town and Polokwane City play host to Orlando Pirates.
All of these games involve teams in the top five, but for the Glamour Boys to go on top, their first assignment will be to beat Baroka, who is second on the table, with 12 points, just three ahead of Chiefs. Baroka is also two goals to the good, compared to Steve Komphela's team’s goal difference and, therefore, even winning by one goal can take Chiefs exactly level with the opponents. However, table toppers, Golden Arrows have a goal difference of +6, which means that Chiefs will need three goals to the good to match Clinton Larsen’s team, should they lose against Chippa United. Therefore, a combination such as Arrows losing by two goals and Chiefs winning by two (or any similar permutation) would see Chiefs leapfrog both Arrows and Baroka.
However, Chiefs will also need Orlando Pirates to lose against Polokwane City, as all three points would put their Soweto rivals out of reach on 14 points. Furthermore, a big win for Cape Town City (who are level on points and two goals behind on goal difference) could see Chiefs fall behind as well.
Therefore, it is a long stretch for Amakhosi as all four of today’s games will need to finish in their favour, but if the footballing gods smile down on them today, they could find themselves at the top of the log.
