SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson put his side’s 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match on Saturday afternoon down to his ‘good game plan’.
United approached the game with clear instructions as they sat back in defence and looked to hit on the counter-attack, and that is just how they scored the game’s only goal in the 76th minute.
Thuso Phala broke down the right flank and supplied a pin-point pass for Bradley Grobler to turn home.
“We had a good game plan today and it worked for us, especially the fact that Pirates are a running team and we like to play football,” said Johnson.
“But when they run at you sometimes it is difficult. They have got quality players.
“We struck to our game plan and I think that is the biggest thing. The team stuck to the game plan the whole game and not only for 25 minutes like we did the last time out against Maritzburg United (which we lost).
“We got the goal, I think we could have got two more, there was enough space for two more, but it didn’t happen today. One goal is what separates the two teams and we were able to get the three points.
“Today is a redemption in the mind, the mentality has got to stay the same right through the 90 minutes. Win or lose, we didn’t mind, but we had to stay focused on our game plan and stay focused on what we wanted to do.
“I thought we got the balls in the right places at the right moments and yes we should have scored one or two more.”
