Player Ratings: Pirates V Arrows

Soccer Laduma rates the individual performances of the players following Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 loss to Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match on Wednesday, 28 October 2015.

Orlando Pirates

Siyabonga Mpontshane: 6

He was a spectator for large parts of the game as his side dominated possession. He did make a couple good saves, but could do nothing about the two goals he conceded. He made a good early save to deny Khenyeza from a 24-yard free-kick in the second minute. He made a good save in the tenth minute to deny Mahachi from 20-yards out.

Happy Jele: 6

He started well in his right-back position, but had to come off injured in the 30th minute.

Siyabonga Sangweni: 5.5

He had a poor game in defence and was caught on the counter-attack at crucial times. He also squandered some good scoring chances. He made a poor error in defence in the tenth minute which allowed Mahachi through on goal, but his keeper saved the attempt from the Arrows man. He squandered a good scoring chance in the 64th minute after firing a shot following a goalmouth scramble inside the Arrows box over the target from close range.

Ayanda Gcaba: 6

He had a quiet game in defence. He did adapt well as he moved from centre back to left-back following the injury to Jele and introduction of Gyimah. He got caught out a couple of times on the counter, but tracked back well. He offered little in attack down the flank.

Thabo Matlaba: 6

He started really well at left-back and caused a few problems going forward. He produced a good cross from the left for Mugerwa in the 28th minute, but the latter saw his close range shot saved. However, after he switched to right-back following the injury to Jele, he was not in the game that much.

Mpho Mvelase: 6

He looked full of energy and running from the first whistle, but his passing was not at its best and his finishing was poor. He should have scored on the rebound in the 40th minute after an Erasmus shot was initially blocked by the keeper, but he saw his effort thwarted by the quick reflexes of the Arrows shot-stopper who made a second save.

Issa Sarr: 6

He had an average game in his defensive midfield role. For the most part he provided that buffer in front of the defence, but was cvaught out on the counter-attack twice which led to the goals being scored.

Yassar Mugerwa: 6

He had a quiet game in the centre of midfield and did not offer much creativity going forward. He met a left wing cross in the 28th minute, but saw his close range volley well-saved by the keeper. He was substituted in the 58th minute.

Luvuyo Memela: 6.5

He had a good game and was a constant threat in attack. He created a few chances on goal for his teammates and also had some opportunities to score, but his finishing was poor. He broke into the Arrows box in the 32nd minute, but was superbly denied by the onrushing Arrows keeper. He produced a good low cross from the right in the 40th minute for Erasmus, but the striker shot straight at the keeper. He fired into the side netting from 16-yards out in the 48th minute after being put through on goal by Erasmus. In the 76th minute he put Majoro through on goal with an inch perfect pass, but the latter missed the scoring chance.

Kermit Erasmus: 6.5

He was lively from the first whistle and posed a real threat in attack, but his finishing was poor. He squandered a great scoring chance in the eighth minute after mistake in defence by Arrows presented him with an open goal, but he fired wide from just inside the box. He met a Memela cross from the right in the 40th minute, but was denied at close range by the keeper. He played Memela through on goal in the 48th minute, but the latter missed the target with his shot.

Thamsanqa Gabuza: 5.5

He was nowhere to be seen and saw very little of the ball. He was substituted in the 53rd minute.

Substitutes

Edwin Gyimah: 6

He came on in the 30th minute for the injured Jele and took up the centre-back role. He did ok for most of the game, but like his teammates he was caught sleeping on the counter-attack which resulted in the two goals against his side.

Lehlohonolo Majoro: 6

He came on in the 53rd minute and added some attacking impetus upfront, but his finishing was poor. In the 76th minute he was put through on goal, but was thwarted by the Arrows keeper in a one-on-one.

Gift Motupa: 6.5

Came on in the 58th minute and had a positive impact on the game with his attacking flair. He had a powerful 16-yard shot well-saved by the Arrows keeper in the 66th minute. He had a long range shot on goal in the 80th minute, but again was denied by the fingertips of Mbaeva.

Golden Arrows

Maximilian Mbaeva: 8.5

The keeper had one of the games of the season between the sticks and was the difference between winning and losing for his side. An error in communication between him and Mngwengwe in the eighth minute allowed Erasmus through on goal, but luckily the Pirates striker missed open goals. He made a good close range save in the 28th minute to deny Mugerwa. He did brilliantly to make a double save from close range in the 40th minute to first deny Erasmus and then Mvelase the rebound. He made another good save to deny Motupa from 16-yards out in the 66th minute. He made another fantastic stop in the 76th minute to thwart Majoro in a one-on-one. He made an outstanding save in the 80th minute to deny Motupa from long range. He was awarded the ‘man of the match’ for his efforts.

Siyabonga Dube: 6

He was not in the game much, but performed his defensive duties well. He could have offered more in attack.

Nkanyiso Mngwengwe: 7

Besides from one mistake early on in the game he produced an outstanding performance in the centre of defence and kept the likes of Gabuza and Erasmus quiet.

Trevor Mathiane: 7

Much like his centre partner, he was solid in defence and cut out attacks with well-timed tackles and good reading of the game.

Thembela Sikhakhane: 6

He had a quiet game in his left-back role. He defended well, but could have offered more in attack.

Kudakwashe Mahachi: 7

He had an up and down game, but when he was in the action he made a real difference to the Arrows attack. He capitalised on a mistake by Sangweni in the tenth minute to break through on goal, but was denied by the Pirates keeper. He opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a low driven 16-yard shot into the corner of the net. He was substituted in the 88th minute.

Gladwin Shitolo: 7

He did well in his centre-midfield role and kept the Pirates attack at bay with his reading of the game. He also scored his side’s second goal in the 83rd minute with a fine finish from just inside the box after a swift counter-attack. He was substituted in the 92nd minute.

Nkanyiso Cele: 6.5

He did a lot of work off the ball in terms of marking and chasing down attacking players from Pirates.

Deon Hotto: 6

He had an average game in right-midfield for Arrows. He did what was required of him and not much more.

Mabhuti Khenyeza: 6

He looked lively early on, but died out towards the end of the first half. He had a shot on goal as early as the second minute from a 24-yard free-kick, but his effort was well-saved by the keeper. He was substituted in the 55th minute.

Andile Fikizolo: 6

He was not really in the game much and saw very little of the ball. He did nothing worth mentioning.

Substitutes

Mwape Musonda: 6

He came on in the 55th minute to help tighten up the midfield and he did his job.

Chris Katjiukua: N/A

He came on in the 88th minute and had no impact on the game.

Rodney Ramagalela: N/A

He came on in the 92nd minute and had no impact on the game.
