Shongwe Strike Enough To See Off Tuks

Jabulani Shongwe's second-half goal was enough to earn Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win over the University of Pretoria at the Tuks Stadium.

Wits dominated in the opening exchanges, although Tuks had the first meaningful opening in the 16th minute when Thabiso Nkoana's close range effort was saved by Moeneeb Josephs.

The first half proved to be stop-start affair due to the amount of fouls committed from both sides, while there was only one registered effort on target in the opening stanza.

After long and quiet spell in the half, Wits finally produced a promising opening just before the break when Daine Klate fired an effort just over crossbar from the edge of the area.

However, the visitors broke the deadlock five minutes after the halftime break when Nazeer floated a ball to the far post for Jabulani Shongwe to side-foot past Washington Arubi.

Tuks nearly pulled level in the 62nd minute when Lucky Mathosi connected with a cross from the right but Josephs was on hand to keep out the striker's header with superb one-handed save.

Sammy Troughton's side were presented with another chance three minutes later but Vuyisile Ntombayithethi failed to keep his on target from close range.

AmaTuks continued to search for an equaliser in the remaining stages of the half, however they failed to bypass a resolute wits defence.

The win moves Gavin Hunt's side up to second in the Absa Premiership standings, while AmaTuks remain in 14th spot.
