Polokwane Defence Frustrates Pirates

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Polokwane City 0-0 Orlando Pirates

Date: 22 September 2015

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

The Polokwane City defence frustrated Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night as the game ended 0-0.

The home side made a good start to the game with their first shot on goal in the fifth minute after a short corner-kick resulted in Jabulani Maluleke trying his luck from the edge of the box, but he saw his effort well-saved by the Buccaneers keeper.

Six minutes later Muzikayifani Ngidi worked himself into space 20-yards out, but the Polokwane striker fired his volley inches over the target.

In the 25th minute some swift passing from Polokwane also saw Maluleke in space just outside the box, but once again his thunderous shot was brilliantly saved by Felix Ovono.

Pirates offered very little in terms of attack as they struggled to break down a well-organised Polokwane defence largely due to bad passing and poor decision making in the final third.

In fact, the Buccaneers first shot on goal came in the 43rd minute when Thabo Matlaba fired just over the crossbar from 30-yards out.

The half ended 0-0.

It was more of the same at the start of the second half as Polokwane continued to frustrate the Pirates attack.

The Buccaneers suffered a further set-back just after the hour mark when Oupa Mayisa left the field injured and was replaced by

In the 63rd minute Pirates looked to have broken the deadlock when Kermit Erasmus found the back of the net after latching onto a Happy Jele through ball, but his goal was disallowed due to off-sides.

Seven minutes later only a fantastic save by debutant George Chigova could deny Erasmus as the Polokwane keeper got down low to his left to palm an 18-yard shot from the Pirates striker around the post.

The home side were almost gifted the lead in the 72nd minute when a poor clearance from Ovono went straight to Baptiste Faye, but he fired over from the edge of the box with the goal at his mercy.

Four minutes later Mpho Makola cut in from the left flank, but saw his stinging 16-yard shot superbly saved by the Polokwane keeper.

Pirates pushed forward in the final ten minutes, but could not break the deadlock and had to settle for a share of the spoils with City, 0-0.
