The Brazilians started positively with Khama Billiat sending Themba Zwane through on goal in the seventh minute, but his shot from ten-yards out was deflected inches over the target.

Pirates first chance in front of goal came in the 13th minute when Oupa Manyisa played Thamsanqa Gabuza into space just inside the box, but he fired wide under pressure from the defence.

In the 25th minute Sundowns took the lead when a mistake in defence by Issa Sarr saw him clear a right wing cross from Yannick Zakri straight to Khama Billiat who headed home from ten-yards out, 1-0.

Five minutes later Pirates nearly drew level following a goalmouth scramble inside the Sundowns box which saw Denis Onyango superbly deny Ayanda Gcaba from close range.

In the 40th minute Thabo Matlaba almost found the back of the net when the Pirates player fired a thunderous 30-yard shot inches wide of the post.

Two minutes before the break Percy Tau should have doubled Sundowns’ lead when he was slipped through on goal by Billiat, but he was denied in a one-on-one with Jackson Mabokgwane.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Sundowns.

Four minutes into the second half Zakri doubled Sundowns’ lead when he broke through on goal and made no mistake with just the goalkeeper to beat, 2-0.

Pirates tried to find their way back into the game and came close to pulling a goal back on the hour mark when substitute Mpho Makola let loose with a powerful long range shot, but his effort was brilliantly saved by Onyango.

In the 66th minute Khama Billiat nearly found his side’s third goal when he broke into the box from the left flank, but fired into the side-netting from ten-yards out.

Ten minutes later Thamsanqa Gabuza's last contribution to the game saw him drive into the box from midfield, but his powerful effort sailed well-wide of the target.

Two minutes from time Khama Billiat was unlucky not to find his second goal of the afternoon when a 20-yard strike from him came back off the crossbar.

Nonetheless, the match ended with Sundowns beating Pirates 2-0 and Mosimane's charges remain three points behind leaders, Bidvest Wits.
