Arrows Shock Pirates

Full Time: Orlando Pirates 0-2 Golden Arrows

Two second-half goals saw Golden Arrows beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a rather poor start by both team’s defences in the opening stages of the game.

Miscommunication in the eighth minute between Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva and defender Nkanyiso Mngwengwe allowed Kermit Erasmus an open shot on an empty goal, but somehow his miscued his shot wide from just inside the box.

Two minutes later an error in defence by Siyabonga Sangweni afforded Kudakwashe Mahachi to break behind the Pirates backline, but his 20-yard shot was brilliantly saved by the keeper.

The next effort on goal only came in the 28th minute when a left wing cross from Thabo Matlaba was met by Yassar Mugerwa, but his close range volley was saved by the Arrows keeper.

Two minutes later Pirates suffered a set-back as Happy Jele had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Edwin Gyimah.

In the 32nd minute Luvuyo Memela broke into the Arrows box, but again Mbaeva was alert to the danger and dived at the attacker’s feet to thwart the danger.

Erasmus should have scored in the 40th minute when he met a low right wing cross from Memela, but he was magnificently denied by Arrows keeper from six-yards out.

The Buccaneers continued to dominate matters, but could not break the deadlock before half time.

Seven minutes into the second half Pirates were made to pay for their missed opportunities when Mahachi gave Arrows the lead after driving into the box from the left and firing the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 16-yards out, 1-0.

Sangweni had a great chance to level matters in the 64th minute after a corner-kick resulted in a goalmouth scramble inside the Arrows box, but the defender shot over from eight-yards out.

Ten minutes later Memela played Lehlohonolo Majoro through on goal, but yet again Mbaeva was quick off his line to deny the Pirates man.

In the 83rd minute, very much against the run of play, Arrows sealed victory when Gladwin Shitolo found the bottom corner of the net from just inside the box, 2-0.

The win is Arrows fourth in the league this season while the loss is Pirates fourth in the Absa Premiership.
