Nine-Man Wits Beat Ten Man Pirates

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Orlando Pirates 0-1 Bidvest Wits

Date: 21 October 2015

Venue: Orlando Stadium

In an Absa Premiership match that saw three red cards and one goal, a nine man Bidvest Wits ran out 1-0 winners over a ten man Orlando Pirates in a league match at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a bright start for Wits who were awarded a penalty-kick in the ninth minute after Phakamani Mahlambi was brought down inside the box by Sifiso Myeni.

Henrico Botes stepped up and saw his penalty-kick well-saved by the Buccaneers goalkeeper Felipe Ovono.

Ovono, however, went from hero to zero four minutes later when he fumbled a harmless right-sided free-kick into the box from Daine Klate into his own goal under no pressure, 1-0.

In the 33rd minute Wits suffered a set-back when they were reduced to ten men following a straight red card for Thulani Hlatshwayo after an extremely dangerous tackle on Myeni.

Following the tackle Myeni had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Mpho Makola.

Pirates took control of the game after that, but could not find an equaliser before the break.

The Buccaneers controlled the game at the start of the second half, but only managed their first opening on the hour mark when Kermit Erasmus drove into the box, but saw his 16-yard shot well-saved by Moneeb Josephs.

In the 72nd minute Thamsanqa Gabuza came close to opening the scoring when he met a left-wing cross from Mpho Makola, but he saw his 14-yard volley cleared off the line by Nazeer Allie.

Two minutes later Wits were reduced to nine men when Calvin Kadi was shown a straight red card for a two-footed tackle on Ayanda Gcaba.

Despite being two men down, Wits nearly doubled their lead in the 80th minute when Mahlambi fired a thunderous 30-yard free-kick just over the target.

A minute later we saw our third red card when referee Victor Gomez handed Lehlogonolo Masalesa his second booking of the game to reduce Pirates to ten men.

Nonetheless, Pirates pushed numbers forward in the final ten minutes of the game, but could not find a goal as they suffered their third loss of the league season.
