Maritzburg Shock Chiefs

Absa Premiership

Full Time:  Maritzburg United 1-0 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 11 March 2015

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

A goal nine minutes from time by Khumbulani Banda handed Maritzburg United a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala stadium on Wednesday night.

The Amakhosi controlled the early possession stakes, but struggled to fashion any real clear cut chances in front of goal.

Instead, the first real opportunity of the half fell to Maritzburg in the 17th minute when a Philani Zulu cross from the right was controlled on the chest by Thamsanqa Mkhize, but his volley from close range went narrowly wide of the target.

A minute later the play swung to the other end of the park with Siphelele Mthembu letting fly with a low shot from the edge of the box, but his effort skimmed the wrong side of the post.

A lot of the play was concentrated in the middle of the park after that and neither side was able to create any decent openings in front of goal.

Instead, the half was dictated by the defences of both as the half ended 0-0.

Chiefs came close to breaking the deadlock seven minutes after the restart when Tefu Mashamaite met a right-sided free-kick from Bernard Parker, but his header from close range went over the goal.

On the hour mark some swift passing from the Soweto-based club saw Parker into space 16-yards out, but he dragged his shot agonisingly wide of the goal.

Chances were certainly not at a premium in this game and our next real effort only came in the 77th minute when an 18-yard shot from Mkhize went just wide of Chiefs goal.

Four minutes later, though, and Maritzburg did take the lead when Khumbulani Banda headed a corner-kick home with his first touch of the ball after coming on as a substitute.

Chiefs threw numbers forward in the final minutes of the game and came close to finding the equaliser in the dying seconds when Siboniso Gaxa struck the crossbar with scissor-kick volley, but it was not to be as Martizburg walked away with all three points.
