Wits Dent Downs' Title Hopes
Result: Bidvest Wits 1-0 Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 03 March 2015
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
A solitary strike from Sibusiso Vilakazi handed Bidvest Wits a 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday evening.
It was all Wits for large parts of the opening exchanges, as the likes of Sibusiso Vilakazi and Papy Faty were causing a number of problems for the visitors.
Faty should have given Wits the lead in the 24th minute, the midfielder did well to create space for himself but ended up skewing his effort well wide of the target.
Pitso Mosimane's men were on the back foot throughout the opening 45 minutes but whenever they managed to sneak through, the Wits defence were on hand to clear, most notably Thulani Hlatshwayo's last ditch challenge on Cuthbert Malajila.
Wits, however, failed to take advantage of their dominance, as defender Kees Kwaakman blasted over from six-yards out just before the halftime break.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, with Wits seeing most of the ball, although both sides struggled to create any openings due to the congestion in the middle of the park.
After a barren spell in the second half, Wits eventually broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, as Vilakazi did well to eliminate Ramahlwe Mphahlele before calmly slotting past Denis Onyango.
The lead could have been doubled in the 82nd minute, Vilakazi turned provider to thread a pass to Jabulani Shongwe, but the midfielder blasted over from 12-yards out.
Mosimane threw on the likes of Anthony Laffor and Katlego Mashego in the hopes of grabbing a late equaliser and it was Laffor who went closest as his header crashed against the upright in stoppage time.
Sundowns' 15-game unbeaten run comes to an end, while Wits extend their unbeaten run in the league to eight games.
