Bucs Defeat Maritzburg To End 12-Game Winless Streak
Date: 11 April 2017
Result: Orlando Pirates 2-0 Maritzburg United
Venue: Orlando Stadium
Orlando Pirates ended their winless streak in the league when they secured a 2-0 victory against Maritzburg United in their Absa Premiership encounter on Tuesday night.
The game got off to a slow start with both sides intent on getting behind the ball and sniffing out one another's weaknesses.
Maritzburg almost took the lead in the fourth minute after Evans Rusike's clever flick found Lebohang Maboe in space, but the forward's cross into the area proved wasteful.
The visitors got behind the Pirates defence on a few occasions in the opening exchanges, but wasteful finishing from Andrea Fillecia and Deolin Mekoa ensured the score remained goalless.
Oupa Manyisa and Mpho Makola combined well in the 12th minute to unlock the Maritzburg defence, but Brian Onyango did well to stop the Pirates captain from giving a return ball in the area.
However, the home side drew first blood a minute later when Ayanda Gcaba rose highest to head home Manyisa's ball into the area.
The goal changed the momentum of the game as Pirates grew in confidence, whilst the visitors were reduced to long-range efforts at goal in their bid to draw level.
Maritzburg were gifted with a great opportunity to go level moments before the break, but goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane did well to block Maboe's effort from point-blank range.
The second-half got off to a lively start with both Maritzburg and Pirates being granted good opportunities to score, most notably Tendai Ndoro's glaring missed effort after a great through ball by Lorch.
Brian Onyango was sent-off in the 51st minute after recieving a second bookable offence for a harsh challenge on Ndoro.
Fadlu Davids immediately responded by introducing Blessing Moyo for Fillecia as he looked to stabilise the defence.
Kurt Lentjies provided Maboe with the perfect opportunity to draw level, but the forward took a touch-too-much and saw his effort being blocked by Happy Jele.
Substitute Dove Wome doubled his side's advantage in the 79th minute when a great passing move saw him slot the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper's legs.
Things went from bad-to-worse for Mariztburg as they were reduced to nine-men after Mekoa got his second yellow card for a late tackle on Memela.
Pirates played the remaining minutes of the encounter with much ease as they secured their first three points in 2017 and their first three points under coach Kjell Jonevret.
