Madisha Strike Hands Sundowns Victory

Absa Premiership

Result: Free State Stars 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 16 April 2017

Venue: James Motlatsi Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Free State Stars 1-0 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the James Motlatsi Stadium.
The home side gave a good account of themselves in the opening exchanges with Paulos Masehe pulling the strings in the midfield for the Bethlehem based-outfit.

Sundowns struggled to get into their rhythm and looked to break down the Stars defence with the pace of Percy Tau and Themba Zwane, however defender Thamsanqa Teyise stood firm to each attack.

Tau should've broken the deadlock for the visitors in the 19th minute when he eluded the off-side trap to get onto the end of Mzikayise Mashaba's pass, but the forward's first-touch let him down.

Sundowns continued to probe and were unlucky not to break the deadlock through respective efforts from Billiat and Tau towards the end of the first-half, but the breakthrough finally arrived when Madisha volleyed home Billiat's corner on the stroke of half-time.

The visitors came out in the second-half with much more of an attacking intent and made their intentions clear when Anthony Laffor replaced Mashaba. The Liberian was immediately in the thick of things when he ran onto Tau's great through ball, but his effort was ballooned over the crossbar.

Stars threw numbers forward and put a great deal of pressure on Sundowns with their attacking play, but wasteful finishing proved the order of the day for the home side.

Laffor should've doubled his side's lead in the 65th minute when Langerman'scross found him unmarked in the area, but the forward miscued his header.

Sundowns thought they had wrappd up all three points in the 80th minute when Kekana's well-struck free-kick cannoned off the crossbar into the path of Billiat who failed to get his shot underway.

Sundowns had a flurry of chances to extend their lead in the final ten minutes, but failed to convert any of the chances as they ran out 1-0 victors.

Here's how they lined up:

Stars:  32. Ngobeni, 5. Masehe, 11. Jantjie, 24. Tlhone, 38. Anas (Sekola 46'), 50. Vilakazi (Ntuli 55'), 15. Kerspuy, 35. Teyise, 20. Mashego, 8. Venter, 26. Dlamini.

Sundowns: 36. Onyango, 32. Madisha, 16. Nascimento, 4. Langerman, 27. Morena (Ngcongca 46'), 8. Kekana, 15. Mohomi, 33. Billiat, 22. Tau (Khumalo 84'), 18. Zwane, 19. Mashaba (Laffor 46').
