Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates bosses will hold a joint press conference this afternoon alongside Multichoice, and while the reason is unknown, they have spoken of a ‘special announcement’.
Football in South Africa is currently at a standstill due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the globe, and fans around the country are itching to know when games will be able to return again.
SAFA have suggested that it could be months before supporters will be able to attend matches, and that the well-being of the players will have to be guaranteed before behind-closed-doors games can be put on, however there may be more information given at today’s press conference.
Irvin Khoza and Kaizer Motaung will be joined by Multichoice’s Imtiaz Patel as well as Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, and the Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, where a statement could be made on the potential way forward for football in South Africa.
No media will be present at the conference as a way of making sure they adhere to social distancing rules, although questions will be allowed via a private channel made available to journalists across the country.
With South Africa on lockdown until the end of April, it is unlikely that games will return to the Absa Premiership or GladAfrica Championship until mid-May at the earliest, however there may be a better idea of what lies ahead once the conference has taken place at 17h00.
The conference will be shown live on SuperSport 4.
