How Much? – Survey Estimates Average Wage For Absa Prem Stars

The Global Sports Salaries Survey for 2018 is out, and the in-depth report has given an estimate as to how much the average player in the Absa Premiership is earning per year. It might be less than you think…

While there has been plenty said about wages in South Africa – both at the top end and bottom end of the spectrum – there are rarely any figures actually confirmed by the league or clubs, unlike, for instance, America, where all wages are published for the general public.

According to their research, the GSSS believes that the average basic annual first team pay for a player in South Africa’s top flight is around R71,000 per month, equating to about R854,000 per year.

The Siya crew spoke to Nick Harris about how the figures were calculated, and here’s what he had to say, "We wanted to attempt to provide a ballpark guide to average top-flight football salaries in as many countries as possible.

"For nine different football leagues, we have sufficiently good information that they are included on a club-by-club basis. That's the Big 5 European top divisions plus MLS in North America, CSL and J-League in Asia and Scotland's Premiership.

"For South Africa for this project, the background is as follows. I first looked at this issue back in 2014 as part of a project for the Mail on Sunday / Sportingintelligence. I spoke to league and club sources at that time and was given some (by no means all) financial information that led to us producing an average top-flight wage THEN of £33,659 (UK pounds, per year).

"This time we went back to some of the same sources but in addition were able to draw upon bits and pieces of public information about the league - such as total PSL revenues of almost 1bn rand - which, allied with what we have been told about the relationship between income and wages, allowed us to make our average wage calculations.

"To cut to the chase, those calculations lead us to a conclusion that the average ABSA Premiership basic salary this season is in the region of slightly more than 71,000 rand per month or 854,000 a year. To stress: that is average, with a smaller group of players on more and more players on less.

"The 'check and balance' element in this considers several things including but not only total revenue of the PSL clubs of around 1bn rand (a big share of which is the 16 top-flight clubs), and the wages to turnover ratio at those clubs.

"If the league and/or the clubs would like to provide specific figures, that would be great.  No figure like ours to the nearest pound is ever going to be exactly right, not least because the number changes every day with every new contract signed or renewed. But we're confident we're not far off."
