Last season, the likes of Samir Nurkovic and Gabadinho Mhango tore up the scoring charts, yet this season, struggle to replicate that form. In light of this, we take a look at five other strikers who are experiencing goal droughts this season.
Nurkovic came to the DStv Premiership from the Slovakian second division following a prolific spell in front of goals where he managed to get 23 goals for KFC Kormano. It didn’t take long for the Serb to establish himself as one of the most lethal strikers in Mzansi, with his aerial skills second to none. His 13 goals in his debut season for Kaizer Chiefs spearheaded Amakhosi’s title charge although they narrowly fell short at the last hurdle.
This season, the 28-year-old has struggled to replicate that form, with injury as well as talk of a move away from the club playing its part. In the 13 matches in which he has featured, Nurkovic has scored just two goals. His lack of potency in front of goals coincided with Chiefs’ struggles this season.
Another player who has struggled for goals this season is last campaign’s joint top scorer Mhango, who finished on 16 goals alongside Peter Shalulile.
The Malawian recently opened up on the injuries he has experienced and how they have derailed his plans for the campaign. Mhango who struck 16 times for Pirates last season, has managed just two goals for the Buccaneers, which has seen the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa edge ahead of him in the Pirates pecking order.
