Season’s Best: Top 5 Goalies In The PSL

Over the new few weeks, the Siya crew will pick the 2018/19 season’s best in the Premier Soccer League topflight ahead of the awards next month.

First up we look at the goalkeepers who have stood head and shoulders above the rest so far in this captain – but rest assured that opinion will be divided on who should be crowned the best.

While some of these goalkeepers have conceded plenty, their individual performances in all competitions should not be ignored.

Here’s our list:

Ronwen Williams (SuperSport United)

Age: 27

Arguably this season’s best performer between the sticks despite his side blowing hot and cold. Williams has 13 cleans sheets in 32 games from all domestic competitions, conceding 29. He has singlehandedly kept Matsatsantsa and has saved 25 per cent of the penalties he has faced.

Richard Ofori (Maritzburg United)

Age: 25

Expect clubs to be chasing after his signature should the Team of Choice be relegated, especially if he has a good AFCON tournament with Ghana. Maritzburg may be bottom of the log, but Ofori has still shown his class with seven clean sheets from 27 games, conceding 29 – with several teams above Maritzburg letting in more.

George Chigova (Polokwane City)

Age: 28

He’s also headed to the AFCON and has played a crucial role in Rise & Shine being in an incredible fourth place in the league with four league games to go. Chigova has kept seven clean sheets, though he averages conceding a goal a game.

Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Age: 33

Injuries have limited his domestic appearances, but eight clean sheets in 17 matches remains an impressive return from Africa’s No.1 goalie. His display on the continent should also be taken into account, where Downs have now reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Peter Leeuwnburg (Cape Town City)

Age: 25

Technically very good, but the number of goals he has conceded (32) in 30 matches will probably raise eyebrows. Most of the goals are really through no fault of his won, and he makes up for it with 12 clean sheets as well as constant praise from coach Benni McCarthy in his debut season.
