Remembering 'The Ellis Park 43' - 16 Years Later

16 years ago, today, in what remains the worst sporting disaster in South African history, 43 football fans needlessly lost their lives.

On April 11th, 2001 as Orlando Pirates played Kaizer Chiefs in a sold-out Ellis Park Stadium, elation turned to devastation as a stampede into the stadium injured 158 and killed 43.

Stadium organisers, fans, league officials, police and private security have all apportioned a part of the blame for the tragic events of the day and a commemorative plaque was put up outside the stadium.

No football fan should ever attend the game they love and never make it home. Soccer Laduma and South Africa’s football fraternity continue to pay homage to those that lost their lives.

RIP The 43
