Downs Seek To Hold On Tightly At The Top, However Ea Lla Koto Have Other Plans...

The excitement amongst the local football supporters is at it's peak as the Premier Soccer League enters the final round for the 2018/19 season. As it stands, Mamelodi Sundowns lead the standings by two points, however in second place, Orlando Pirates are breathing down their necks as the two-horse race for the title continues.

Pitso Mosimane's charges will be travelling away as they face Free State Stars at Goble Park. Going into the match, the home side has their PSL status on the line as they find themselves within the relegation zone. This, making the mountain much harder for Masadawana to climb.

Who will make it through and walk away with the winners medal dangling around their necks? Former Golden Arrows goalkeeper, Thulasizwe Khuzwayo gives his predictions on the following matches. Do you agree with his choices?

Golden Arrows v Bidvest Wits (Premier Soccer League)

Match 3 Soccer 6 Pool 11 May S6 V3 P2

League Rankings: Golden Arrows 10th & Bidvest Wits 3rd

Useful facts: Golden Arrows’ result against Mamelodi Sundowns, a game yet to take place at the time of writing, would have determined whether they are in the Top Eight or are looking to get in. Either way, this game against Bidvest Wits is very important for the Durban side as a win will all but ensure they participate in the MTN8 next season, which would be a notable achievement for a team with limited resources. Games between the two teams are always hard-fought, as evidenced by the 2-2 draw they played out to in their first round meeting in December last year, and this one will be no different. The Clever Boys came off a 3-1 win over Baroka FC and will be high on confidence, and want to hold on to third place.

Chippa United v Kaizer Chiefs (Premier Soccer League)

Match 4 Soccer 6 Pool 11 May S6 V3 P2

League Rankings: Chippa United 13th & Kaizer Chiefs 7th

Useful facts: It really has been a lacklustre season for Kaizer Chiefs in the league, and unfortunately even a victory for them against Chippa United will not move them up the standings. However, it’s what they will be fighting for, as there is pride to salvage, plus players will be out to impress the coach so as to remain in the plans for next season. The Chilli Boys, though, are one team that is known to have given the Soweto giants problems in the past and they will want things to continue that way as they bid to move completely away from the relegation zone. It’s perhaps the best time for them to face Ernst Middendorp’s charges, who have really been uninspiring in recent times. Working in their favour is home ground advantage, although anywhere around the country always feels like home for Amakhosi, who have a big fanbase.

Thulasizwe Khuzwayo: Draw

Free State Stars v Mamelodi Sundowns (English Premier League)

Match 6 Soccer 6 Pool 11 May S6 V3 P2

League Rankings: Free State Stars 14th & Mamelodi Sundowns 2nd

Useful facts: It’s rather been a season to forget for Free State Stars following their exploits of the 2017/18 campaign, where they went on to win a cup. They have let in 46 goals in the league, which is the joint-highest worst defensive record in the league, and it remains to be seen if they have it in thems to shut out a Mamelodi Sundowns attack brimming with talent and class. But they will give it their all, as they are aware that anything less than a win could mean life in the National First Division next season. There is a great deal of sentiment attached to this game – if Ea Lla Koto win, they could be denying Downs a chance to add to their eight league titles, and if the Tshwane giants emerge victorious, they could be sending the home side to the lower tier. So much to play for!
