Transfer Watch: City Eye Several Defenders
Transfer Watch: Defenders Currently Being Monitored By Cape Town City
Cape Town City are believed to have set their sights on several defenders who could potentially replace an outgoing player at the club.
Robyn Johannes will complete his move to Bidvest Wits at the end of the current 2017/18 season, after penning a pre-contract with the Students in January this year.
Now, City are looking to find a replacement for the 31-year-old, indicating that they are not yet happy with the depth in their defensive department.
Apart from Johannes, currently in the centre back position is Tshepo Gumede, Taariq Fielies and the versatile Kwanda Mngonyama.
Fielies has formed an influential centre back partnership with Johannes, with Gumede falling just behind the duo on the pecking order.
With the club losing out on Johannes’ services as his contract comes to an end on June 30 this year, Head Coach Benni McCarthy can still depend on both Fielies and Gumede who is contracted to the club beyond the current season.
However, according to sources, following Johannes’ departure at the end of the season, City have identified at least three defenders who could fill the void.
As reported in last week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, City are eyeing the experienced defender, with a view to bring the 33-year-old back to his hometown, although, with Arendse still contracted to Sundowns for two more years, City will need to negotiate a reasonable asking price for the player, should Sundowns be open to hearing offers.
Fransman’s deal with Maritzburg United will be coming to an end next year, June 30, although City have set their sights on potentially adding the player to their books in the upcoming July/August transfer window in order to replace Johannes.
As previously reported by the crew, City are eyeing the Amakhosi defender, who is currently on loan with Bloemfontein Celtic. According to sources, Head Coach Benni McCarthy believes to be an admirer of the player’s trade and there has been talk about possibly approaching Amakhosi in the near future.
It is yet to be seen who City will approach during the upcoming transfer window.
