Preston Star Breaks Silence On Potential Bafana Call
Preston North End star, Tom Barkhuizen, has broken his silence on talk of a possible call-up to Bafana Bafana in the future, confirming that his grandfather is from Mzansi.
The Siya crew reported earlier this month that the 24-year-old could be an option for Stuart Baxter as he looks to widen the pool of South African national team players ahead of their attempts to book a spot at the next African Cup of Nations.
Barkhuizen has confirmed in the English media that it is his grandfather who has the South African link, but admitted that right now he’s fully focused on trying to help Preston make a final push to reach the English Premier League next season.
Speaking to the Lancashire Evening Post, the attacker said, “It’s not something that I’ve really thought about because nobody has mentioned it. If I get a phone call then you never know, but while there’s nothing concrete there’s no point in talking about it from my point of view.
“For now my focus is just on trying to get this club to the Premier League, so anything after that then let’s wait and see.”
Preston take on Sheffield Wednesday today, and if results go their way then they could take up a spot in the playoffs with seven games left to play. Barkhuizen will be making his 40th appearance of the season and hoping to contribute to his 16th goal of the campaign.
