News reaching the Siya crew is that the Mamelodi Sundowns entity is looking to purchase the University of Pretoria’s National First Division status.
According to Siya sources, the Brazilians’ entity is keen on acquiring the club, as part of their overall football strategy. It could, ultimately, be used as a club where Downs’ development products can play senior football as part of their growth, in preparing them for PSL football.
However, should the deal go through, the club will have to run under a completely different entity, in accordance with the rules in the National Soccer League handbook.
The rule defines that no entity can have a stake in more than one professional club.
“No person or entity may, directly or indirectly, acquire an interest or shareholding in a Member Club or a right to become a member of the League if he or it has, directly or indirectly, held an interest or shareholding in another club falling under the jurisdiction of the League in the twelve (12) month period preceding the transaction,” rule number 14.4, as stated in the NSL handbook.
As it stands, should the deal be ratified by the NSL, very little will be expected to change with the league set to commence next month.
