Baxter Responds To Pirates Rumours, Confirms UEL Interest
Stuart Baxter has responded to rumours linking him with a shock return to South Africa with Orlando Pirates, while also confirming interest from elsewhere in the world.
Baxter is currently on the lookout for the next chapter in his career as he assesses his options in Europe following his resignation from the Bafana Bafana job, and it appears that he isn’t short of potential suitors as he considers where he will be headed next.
The exit of Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic from Pirates on Friday night has led to some rumours of Baxter potentially being a target as his successor, however the 66-year-old insists that that is not the case, telling the Siya crew that he is not in line for the Bucs job.
Speaking to the crew from Sweden, Baxter said, “There’s absolutely no substance to rumours linking me with the Pirates job, even though I respect them as a football club... Even if I was to come back to South Africa at some point then it wouldn’t be now, because I’m back in Sweden and I’m assessing my options here.
“I’ve had interest from Steaua București in Romania, and there’s also been interest from other countries too. I’ve just been invited to Stockholm to be part of AIK’s Europa League game against Celtic, so that’s currently the next thing on my agenda.”
AIK, Baxter’s former club, face the Scottish giants in a vital UEFA Europa League qualifier this month, and are looking to honour him for his previous work at the club during the home leg in Stockholm on August 29.
Meanwhile, Steaua are also in the same stage of the competition as they look to book their spot in the UEL group stages, and their interest in Baxter may result in him working in the competition if things move any further forward.
