One of the DStv Premiership golden boot candidates has been offered to Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu, according to Siya sources.
Thabiso Kutumela has been in sizzling hot form so far this season and has led from the front in Maritzburg United’s fight to avoid relegation.
With 12 goals in the league, just two behind leading top scorer Bradley Grobler, Kutumela has almost singlehandedly plucked the Team of Choice out of the drop zone.
The Siya crew has been led to believe the 27-year-old striker has been offered to rivals Usuthu as coach McCarthy plans to beef up his squad for next season.
But this move is only possible if the two KwaZulu-Natal clubs can agree a fee given that Kutumela still has a year left on his contract.
It would have been a totally different conversation if Kutumela, signed from Orlando Pirates on a three-year deal in 2019, was coming to the end of his contract.
As a free agent he would be one of the best available players on the transfer market, but that isn’t the case and Siya sources have in fact suggested that Maritzburg have no plans to part ways with their captain, although they are known to be a selling club.
AmaZulu could be making changes in the off-season with McCarthy gearing for his first full season with the club having not had a say in who was signed at the start of the 2021/22 campaign. He was appointed in December.
Whether club chairman Sandile Zungu would be willing to bite and negotiate a deal with Maritzburg remains to be seen.
