Cape Town City are believed to have banished one of their star players and left him out of the squad for tomorrow’s clash away to TS Galaxy.
Taariq Fielies is the player in question, and the Siya crew has been informed that coach Jan Olde Riekerink has omitted the defender from the team because of his seeming loyalty to Benni McCarthy, the ex-City coach.
McCarthy returned to the Mother City on Wednesday to face his former club with his new one, AmaZulu, and managed quite an emphatic result when Usuthu smashed the Citizens 5-1 in a highly entertaining match that produced four penalties.
Eye witnesses told the Siya crew on Friday that Fielies went to go and embrace McCarthy, who brought him to the club nearly four years ago, and also “shook his hand” after the match despite the result being embarrassing for City.
But there’s probably more to the story…
Asked to comment, City chairman John Comitis confirmed to the Siya crew that he was aware a meeting took place between the coach and the player, but did not know the details.
“I would have to ask the coach what happened because I am not aware that he has not travelled with the team,” said Comitis.
“The coach and the player had a meeting yesterday, that I know. But I don’t know what happened in that meeting.”
Fielies was recently vocal that he is keen to move on and take on a fresh challenge next season if City can release him to one of the Gauteng teams. Now that he has seemingly fallen out with the coach, will this open the door for his exit?
