Reneilwe Letsholonyane could be set for lengthy talks with SuperSport United over a new contract, a Siya source has indicated.
The midfielder, who joined Matsatsantsa from Kaizer Chiefs a little over two seasons ago, turns 37 next year and signs are that he will be getting even less game-time during the remainder of the current season.
The Siya source also suggested that coach Kaitano Tembo had been given a mandate to ready the club’s younger players to take over from Letsholonyane, which would explain the veteran’s sporadic involvement.
Even with the injury to captain Dean Furman, the 2010 World Cup star has not seen his minutes on the pitch improve, but has had to rather watch Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule and Bidvest Wits loanee Phumlani Ntshangase in action while he warms the bench over the last week or so.
Yeye, as he is affectionately known, has managed only four Absa Premiership starts in the club’s 14 fixtures this season. He was an unused substitute when SuperSport suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chiefs last Wednesday in Nelspruit and again in their narrow 1-0 win over Maritzburg United three days later, at home.
The Siya crew reported on the one-year deal extension Letsholonyane signed back in January along with defender Clayton Daniels after doing some digging on the lengths of the contracts following the announcement from the club.
A source indicated that discussions over a new deal had not yet begun, but the player isn’t necessarily in a race against time because – for now – he has not been given reasons to panic by the club, although he is free to agree to a pre-contract with a team of his choice from next month.
