Tau’s Bumper Payday: Millionaire In A Month?
Should Percy Tau’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion go through before next month’s transfer window, he could potentially become a millionaire in a month.
The 24-year-old is believed to be on the verge of moving to the English Premier League club after Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed that Patrice Motsepe had given the go-ahead for the deal, with Brighton looking to bring him on board.
A statement on the club’s official website recently read, “Mamelodi Sundowns is pleased to announce that the President of Mamelodi Sundowns Dr Patrice Motsepe gave instructions to the Management to finalise the deal with Brighton & Hove Albion FC (Brighton) after Percy Tau and his agent came to see him and apologised for disclosing confidential information to the media and for Percy Tau not reporting for training.”
The Seagulls have until August 9th – when the English transfer window closes this year – to get the move over the line, although it could become more complex if they then need to find him a club on loan should he fail to secure a work permit to play in England.
Permits aside though, indications are that the Masandawana star could be earning around £30,000 (R530 000) a week, a figure that equates to just over R2m a month, if the deal goes through, an amount that would put him amongst South Africa’s highest earning players in the world.
For perspective, Benni McCarthy was earning a reported £38,000 (R670,000) a week at the end of his career in England with West Ham United, while Steven Pienaar was cashing in on a reported £50,000 (R885,000) when he was at Everton.
Tau scored 11 goals for Sundowns in the Absa Premiership last season, going on to the win the PSL Footballer of the Season award for his efforts.
