Two overseas clubs that have been interested in one of Maritzburg United’s rising stars are believed to have pulled out of the chase for the player’s signature.
As recently reported by the Siya crew, Maritzburg’s Lebohang Maboe had two overseas clubs, namely KV Oostende in Belgium and Qarabag from Azerbaijan Premier League, interested in his services.
Having already reported that the Team of Choice wanted around €500 000 (±R8 million) for the 23-year-old player’s services, the indication is that both Oostende and Qarabag have since withdrawn their interest in Maboe.
“Maritzburg have named their price, and after the numbers were mentioned, both Oostende and Qarabag were not budging as they felt that the player was overpriced,” said the source.
From their side, Qarabag have decided to look elsewhere for a player to fill the position that Maboe was targeted for, according to the source.
“Qarabag have opted for a Brazilian player with Champions League experience for the same position,” confirmed the source.
According to a source at Maritzburg, there have been no formal offers from overseas for the talented player. Locally, Maboe has been linked with Sundowns, who are believed to be keen on further reinforcing their squad, following the departure of Khama Billiat to Kaizer Chiefs and the imminent move of Percy Tau to English club Brighton & Hove Albion, while Amakhosi have also been linked to the rising star.
Contacted for comment, the player’s representatives told the Siya crew, “From our side, if you say there is no overseas offer, Lebo will be prepared to stay with Maritzburg and complete his contract. It’s his career. He can go on with his career (elsewhere) at a later stage.”
