Orlando Pirates are believed to be closing in on the player who could be a top signing for the club during the off-season.
The indication from sources close to Bucs is that the club could be set to finalise a deal with Linda Mntambo from Chippa United.
As recently reported by the Siya crew, Pirates are linked with the Chippa midfielder, as the Soweto giants and the Eastern Cape outfit are expected to be involved in another deal again during the off-season.
Since joining the club from Jomo Cosmos midway through the 2017/18 season, Mntambo scored five goals in the league and cup matches for Chippa and this has capped off an incredible first PSL campaign for the 28-year-old, much to the delight of his suitors.
“Look, the player is still contracted to Chippa, so expect negotiations to take a bit longer on that one. You must remember that he has just started at Chippa (in January after signing from Cosmos). It’s the club to club matter at this stage. The player has improved so much since his PSL career started, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he gets to finalise the move (to Pirates). He’s also a very humble and good boy,” said the source.
In his recent Soccer Laduma Radio’s Big Interview, the Soweto-born attacking midfielder confirmed his love for Pirates. The player also spoke about his ambition to play in the Soweto Derby one day in his career.
“It is true. I’ve always loved Pirates. I stay a stone’s throw away from Orlando Stadium. That’s the team I grew up supporting and I used to cry when Pirates lost. We have a rich history, my grandfather was one of the founders of Orlando Pirates. I’ve always loved the team, and to see myself, a boy from Soweto, the only thing I’d love is to play a Soweto Derby,” he said at the time.
Mntambo’s former boss and coach at Cosmos, Jomo Sono, who is the uncle of Bucs’ assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena, was recently quoted as saying the Chippa midfield maestro is the best midfielder in Mzansi.
