Hold Up In Benni’s Wishlist?

Benni McCarthy has already put his wishlist forward, the Siya crew understands, but it appears his bosses are some way off in concluding the deals.

According to insiders, the newly crowned Premier Soccer League Coach of the Season has requested that AmaZulu sign Bongani Sam and Keagan Buchanan.

Sam was on the club’s radar in the previous transfer window, but Orlando Pirates were reluctant to release the left back with coach Josef Zinnbauer indicating then that the junior international had a role to play in the final six months of the 2020/21 season.

But Sam remained a fringe player.

Usuthu have also been in advanced talks with Buchanan for some time now and have perhaps felt no rush in putting pen to paper officially because the midfielder is a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Maritzburg in February.

He was also a target for Swallows, but the two parties could not agree on a short-term contract shortly after he left the Midlands.

The delay in trying to secure the signature of both Sam and Buchanan should be a concern for McCarthy – with the season done and dusted, rival clubs will be moving swiftly to pin down their targets and the duo could be on their radar.

Another player the coach is expected to lose out on, is Zukile Kewuti, who joined AmaZulu four months ago on loan from Cape Town City with an option to have the deal made permanent at the end of the season.

City chairman John Comitis confirmed to the media last week that Usuthu had a deadline to trigger the buy option, but let it lapse.

Now the midfielder will rejoin City for pre-season.

Lehlohonolo Majoro, who finished the campaign as AmaZulu’s top scorer, has also not yet had his option to extend his stay triggered.

It’s not just the playing personnel that Usuthu need to make a decision on in the coming weeks after it was revealed to the Siya crew that fitness trainer Zunaid Crowie and performance analyst Pilela Maposa are nearing the end of their contracts.

The duo has until June 30 before their current deals expire, and indications are that they’ve not yet been offered extensions by the club.

It remains to be seen whether AmaZulu will tie all these loose ends in time.
