A former Mamelodi Sundowns player that hasn’t been in action since 2017 is making a surprise return to top-flight football, the Siya crew has been informed.
Mzikayise Mashaba, 30, is training with Chippa United as looks set to seal a contract to resurrect what was at one point a blossoming career ended by an apparent bout of ill-discipline three years ago.
The Siya crew reported last month that Chippa had earmarked Mashaba as a possible replacement for Tebogo Tlolane, who has since joined Orlando Pirates, but coach Clinton Larsen wanted to first assess whether he would fit into his plans for the upcoming 2019/20 season.
It is understood that so far Larsen is pleased with what he is seeing in training despite Mashaba having been inactive since he last played for Sundowns in an Absa Premiership clash against Baroka FC in May 2017.
The player only featured in the first half of that match and reportedly asked coach Pitso Mosimane to substitute him – and that was his last kick of the ball.
Mashaba, who made seven appearances for Bafana Bafana, is well travelled.
He’s played for Free State Stars and Bidvest Wits and was still at Chloorkop when they were crowned league champions in 2014 as well as 2016, plus the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup.
