Mamelodi Sundowns issued a statement on Percy Tau’s future today after reports surfaced in the media, and the player himself has also hit back.
It had been suggested that Masandawana were standing in the player’s way with regards to a move overseas following an award-winning season in the Absa Premiership, with English side, Brighton & Hove Albion said to be interested in signing him.
While a move to England could be difficult due to the strict work permit rules, the Sunday Times say that Brighton have submitted numerous offers for the talented 24-year-old.
The club refuted that in their statement though, saying, “Mamelodi Sundowns have stated on numerous occasions over the past 18 months that it is committed to ensuring that Percy Tau plays and pursues his career in Europe.
“We have been saddened by misrepresentations and false statements in the media concerning discussions for Percy Tau to play in Europe.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not engage and discuss in public and with the media, the confidential negotiations that are currently underway with several interested European clubs for Percy Tau to play in Europe.”
Shortly afterwards, Tau posted on his Instagram stories a message that simply stated ‘By the way, there’s no false statements’. He has since deleted the post.
The Siya crew will continue to monitor Tau's situation as it becomes clearer as to whether he will still be in Sundowns colours next season or not, although Siya sources have suggested that he isn't present with the team in Rustenburg as they prepare for their trip to Togo next month.
