30 Minutes Of Football In A Season, Why Downs Midfielder Opted To Stay?

Unlike Bonginkosi Ntuli and Siyanda Zwane who have left Mamelodi Sundowns to join AmaZulu and Golden Arrows respectively albeit on a loan basis, Lucky Mohomi has opted to stay at the Chloorkop outfit to fight for his place under Head Coach Pitso Mosimane.

Mohomi has struggled for game-time at Downs since joining the club from Free State Stars in 2016.

The midfielder made only two appearances for Downs last season, and on both occasions as a substitute, as he failed to make a single start in all competitions. 

The player’s appearances were when he came on with eight minutes of regulation time remaining against his former team Ea Lla Koto on September 11, as well as against AmaZulu on October 21 with around 22 minutes remaining. 

With the player in the final year of his contract with the Brazilians, and the club since addthe likes of Andile Jali and other new signings to the squad, it had been expected that Mohomi would secure a loan move during the July/August transfer window as he seemingly fell even further down the pecking order.

As reported in the latest Soccer Laduma, edition 1089, money hindered a move away from Sundowns for Mohomi, according to Siya sources in the know.

It is believed that Ea Lla Koto was one of the clubs interested in the 27-year-old although the deal did not materialise, with indications that the player’s financial package was higher than the club was will­ing to pay, and that the player was not willing to take a salary cut, according to sources.  

“Free State Stars had been inter­ested in signing Lucky Mohomi on loan from Sundowns, but the move didn’t happen after the club felt that bringing him from Sundowns would cost them. The player is on a big salary,” said the source.

According to the Siya crew’s records, although Mohomi’s contract with Sundowns is set to expire in June 2019, the club does have an option to extend for another two years.   

Mohomi made his first start of the current season in Downs’ line-up during the team’s MTN8 semi-final first leg match against Cape Town City two weeks ago.
