With Kaizer Chiefs still linked with Kabelo Mahlasela from Bloemfontein Celtic, the Siya crew has learnt that the player could be close to leaving the Mangaung club.
Mahlasela, who is a product of the Orlando Pirates youth development, has been linked with Chiefs since last season. As reported in the latest Soccer Laduma, Chiefs’ interest in the midfielder has escalated as the player is nearing the end of his contract with Celtic, according to sources.
Mahlasela’s contract with Siwelele will expire in June 2018. On his arrival at Celtic from Pirates in 2015, the Sebokeng-born player signed a three-year deal with the club.
According to sources, the 26-year-old player is currently in dispute with the Mangaung club over a contract extension. While Celtic have made their intentions clear about wanting to keep Mahlasela at the club by offering him a new and improved deal, the player has been reluctant on penning the new contract.
Celtic recently announced extending the contracts of Patrick Tignyemb, Wandisile Letlabika and Lantshene Phalane. The club is keen to extend Mahlasela’s contract as well, but the player has been reluctant to sign.
Mahlasela has been a target for Amakhosi for some time, following his impressive performances for Celtic in recent times. As reported in a more detailed story in edition 1048 of Soccer Laduma, the indication from sources close to Mahlasela is that the player is eyeing a move to Chiefs, despite the interest from abroad and in the PSL.
In January, Mahlasela will be eligible to sign a pre-contract with Chiefs, or any other suitor, as he will be entering into the last six months of his current contract.
