Six Amakhosi Who Still Received International Call-Ups…
Kaizer Chiefs may have had a tough run in the Absa Premiership this season, but they still have six players that have been called up for this month’s international fixtures.
The Glamour Boys are currently seventh in South Africa’s top-flight and eight points away from leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns, and it appears that the Nedbank Cup is the only way that they are likely to end a trophy drought that has lasted almost four seasons.
Yet despite their form, Chiefs’ players are seemingly still desirable at international level, and even more interesting is the fact that – in a season plagued by goalkeeping errors – three of their five goalkeepers could represent their countries this month.
Virgil Vries, Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma have been called up for Namibia, Nigeria and South Africa respectively, while Daniel Cardoso will join Bvuma in Stuart Baxter’s Bafana Bafana ranks and both Khama Billiat and Teenage Hadebe will be looking to help Zimbabwe in their efforts to reach the African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Bafana face Libya in Tunisia, needing a draw in order to reach this year’s Afcon, similarly to the Warriors who will qualify with a draw against Congo-Brazzaville, and Vries’ Namibia who are currently second and face Zambia in their final game.
Akpeyi may get given a runout for the Super Eagles given that they have already qualified from Bafana’s group, although they do need to win in order to guarantee top spot in the group.
