Kaizer Chiefs may have no say in where this season’s PSL title will end up, but they will go a long way in determining who gets relegated.
Amakhosi have nine league games remaining this season but will not face any of the current top four in Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City.
They will, however, face the entire current bottom five – Baroka, Chippa United, Black Leopards, Free State Stars and Maritzburg United. These teams are notoriously difficult to play when they are fighting for their PSL lives. Ernst Middendorp’s side will, therefore, go a long way towards settling which team will go into the relegation playoffs (15th place) and which will be relegated outright (16th place).
The German mentor has coached three of the bottom five sides in the past (Chippa United, Free State Stars and Maritzburg United) and could do his former employers harm by beating them.

Chiefs currently sit 6th on the log with 29 points from their 21 games. If they were to take the maximum 27 points still on offer, they would end with 56 points and could still end up challenging for the title. However, with just seven wins in their 21 games so far, it looks fanciful to suggest they could win all of their remaining matches.
