Update On Club’s Relocation Status

With the Premier Soccer League confirming the official start date for the 2021/22 season, one of its member clubs is gearing up for relocation!

The Siya crew reported in June that Cape United have had their GladAfrica Championship status bought for R12-million by businessman Robinson Ramaite, owner of Venda Football Academy in the lower divisions.

With the sale agreement now ratified by the PSL executive committee and the new season underway on August 21, the process to relocate the club has now begun, albeit with some slight niggles as far as the process goes.

Similarly to how Bidvest Wits had to engage its players and staff following news that the Gauteng-based outfit had been sold, Cape United now must do the same because of the change in management and living arrangement.

According to insiders privy to the situation, there are indeed several players who are not keen on moving to Limpopo and would rather have their contracts mutually terminated and furnished with clearances.

However, there are also players who have apparently told the new owners that relocation will not be a stumbling block, although there are certain guarantees they’ve requested, given they are being uprooted from Cape Town to the club’s new base in Limpopo.

The Wits situation, which led to 29 staff being retrenched, was so poorly handled that when Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila played their opening game of the season they only had 14 players in their squad, including just three substitutes.

And that set the tone for a chaotic first few months until then-chairman Masala Mulaudzi sold the club to Abram Sello, who has since also renamed the club Marumo Gallants.

Siya sources at Venda Football Academy have informed the crew that the hierarchy anticipate no such problems and have in fact signed 20 players so far, while some have been allowed to leave as free agents post the sale agreement.

Attempts to get clarity and comment from the club regarding their preparation for the upcoming season proved futile, with a spokesperson who did not want to be quoted saying the team will make announcements in due course.

Coincidentally, Venda Academy play their first GladAfrica Championship game in the Mother City against Cape Town Spurs.
