The 20-year-old Brazilian is currently on trial with the Soweto giants and is believed to have impressed Coach Milutin Sredojevic during the team’s pre-season club friendlies. The central defender is an unknown factor in Mzansi but could be seen as a substitution for Thulani Hlatshwayo.
With Bucs unlikely to sign Hlatshwayo from Bidvest Wits, Marcelo is expected to come in and bolster Bucs’ central defence.
Indications are that Pirates’ assistant coach, Rhulani Mokwena, had an opportunity to see the player in Brazil and under his recommendation and the club is assessing what he can offer to the team.
Bucs’ Project X Team travelled Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, earlier this year and played against some of South America’s top development teams, including Fluminense, Botafogo, Flamengo and Vasco Da Gama.
It is believed that Marcelo was spotted at the tournament while playing for Vasco against the Pirates youngsters.
