Gavin Hunt confirmed this week that his Chippa United squad was a little bit thin, but he could be adding two Mamelodi Sundowns midfielders to his roaster.
The Siya crew reported on Wednesday that Sammy Seabi was no longer going to join Swallows, having surfaced at Chippa United, where another Downs player in Phakamani Mahlambi has already been registered.
Indications are that Hunt could add a third, with talks between Chippa and Sundowns at an advanced stage regarding the transfer of young defensive midfielder Siphesihle Mkhize.
The ex-Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits coach told journalist at the launch of the DStv Premiership that he was still hoping to make more signings before the transfer window slams shut on August 31.
He confirmed the arrival of Mahlambi on loan from Chloorkop after a tough stint at AmaZulu last season as well as that of Mogakolodi Ngele, two players he has worked with before at Wits.
According to insiders, 22-year-old Mkhize is expected to be added to the growing list as Hunt attempts to build a formidable team.
The youth international made just a single appearance in the domestic league and one more in Downs’ CAF Champions League campaign, so the loan move makes sense given he is a fringe player.
But he does have age on his side, with the Chippa move set to give him first team experience in the topflight.
Mkhize was on loan at Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) during the 2019/20 season, which is remembered for being disrupted by Covid with Ajax top of the GladAfrica Championship only to be toppled by Swallows for promotion when the campaign restarted.
