Big Guns To Wait As Attacker Nears Leopards Exit?

Depending on their plans and reported interest, the big guns of the Premier Soccer League could be tempted to wait to see the outcome of Joseph Mhlongo’s contract situation with Black Leopards, if there are still plans from them to sign the player.

Mhlongo has been linked to both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in recent times, however, the player remained at Leopards since their promotion to the top flight league last year, due to his contractual obligations with the club.

However, the forward has been a notable absentee from Leopards’ line-ups in recent matches.

He was excluded from Leopards’ matchday squad in their Telkom Knockout Last 16 clash against Highlands Park last weekend, and was nowhere to be seen in the side’s last Absa Premiership match, before the FIFA international break.

With Lidoda Duvha scheduled to take on SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium tonight, it remains to be seen if Mhlongo will finally make a return for the Limpopo outfit.

According to a Siya source, contract talks between the player and club have stalled, which could be the reason for his exclusion.

Mhlongo’s contract with Leopards is set to expire in June next year, and as confirmed by a close source, the Limpopo-based outfit is keen on extending the 29-year-old player’s deal.

“Joseph Mhlongo’s contract with Black Leopards will expire at the end of the season. Leopards are keen to extend the contract, but there’s been no agreement between the parties about a new deal. The talks have stalled,” said the source.

“The player hasn’t featured for the team in recent matches. He is not injured and is fully fit,” the source added. “There is interest in the player from at least four clubs in the PSL. Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Highlands Park and Polokwane City are all interested in him,” concluded the informant.

Mhlongo will be in a position to negotiate a pre-contract elsewhere in January, once he enters into the final six months of his existing deal.
