Trouble Finds Chippa Again, Ex-Captain In Court Over Alleged Unpaid R2 Million

A former Chippa United captain is allegedly owed over R2 million by the Port Elizabeth club in what is believed to be for unpaid salaries and signing-on fees.

As reported in the latest edition of Soccer Laduma, James Okwuosa’s representatives have confirmed that they have taken Chippa to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland for alleged unpaid salaries and signing-on fees.

In December 2018, Chippa terminated the Nigerian defender’s contract as the club made wholesale changes to their squad, and the Siya crew has since been informed that the 28-year-old has taken the club to CAS to claim his alleged unpaid monies.

Okwuosa penned a two-year deal with the Eastern Cape outfit last year in July, extending his stay with Chippa. The new deal was expected to run until June of 2020.

Johnny Ogbah from Activity Chambers, which is a Nigerian sports law firm, has accused Chippa chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi of backtracking from the agreement reached when Okwuosa’s contract was terminated by the club.

“We entered into a termination agreement with Chippa United chairman Mr Simon Mpengesi in which my client bent over backwards to make concessions just because he wanted to maintain his relationship with Mr Mpengesi,” Ogbah told the Siya crew.

“However, Mr Mpengesi failed to even honour one single payment date and has continually failed to keep any promise he made. As per the agreement duly signed between both parties, the termination fees should have been paid by the end of December 2018, now we are in March 2019 and still going over the same issues. We are tired of chasing him up to stick to the agreement, hence we have proceeded to CAS for justice,” added the representative.

In issue 1103 of Soccer Laduma, it was reported that Chippa were allegedly spending a lot of money on having to pay out coaches that have been fired by the club and to players and agents. At the time, it was also reported that coaches and players who had their contracts terminated by the club had approached the league, with more than half of the squad at the time believed to have been owed signing-on fees from some time ago.

After being approached for comment on Okwuosa’s money allegations, Mpengesi opted not to reply but asked not to be contacted again about the matter.
