Chippa United are in search of a new coach after the shock resignation of Norman Mapeza, who vacated his position on Monday.
Mapeza’s resignation came as a great shock as the Chilli Boys won their match against AmaZulu, with Ruzaigh Gamildien scoring the all-important goal in the 1-0 victory at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
“Chippa United tried without a success to persuade Norman Mapeza to stay as the club's head coach. The chairman (Siviwe Mpengesi), being someone known for firing coaches, was the one pleading with the coach to stay this time, but to no avail,” said the source.
According to sources, the Zimbabwean mentor highlighted that he felt some of the players didn’t give him the respect he needed as he found them at the club, and did not sign them when he joined.
Mapeza joined the Eastern Cape club in October last year, with the team at the bottom of the log at the time.
At the moment, Chippa are 11th on the log and had been serious contenders for a top eight finish under Mapeza.
In the meantime, Chippa have put Mbuyiselo Sambu in charge of the technical team temporarily, while the club will be looking at the options to bring in a new head coach in due course.
Sambu served as Mapeza’s assistant in Chippa’s technical team as he has done so under the different other coaches that have been at the Port Elizabeth club in recent times.
